Huacachina, adrenaline, dunes and oasis

The Huacachina Lagoon, also known as the Oasis of America, is the only natural oasis in South America in the south of Peru and is currently one of the most visited destinations by national and international tourists.

How to get to Huacachina
El Oasis is located in Ica, 5 hours from Lima, and can only be accessed by land. To get there you have two main options: Take a tour from Lima or travel on your own which is to take a public bus.

If you choose to travel independently, it is important to know that there are no public buses that go directly to the town of Huacachina. If you are coming from Lima, you must first take a bus to Ica. Cruz del Sur and Oltursa are two of the Peruvian bus companies that travel this route. Peru Bus is another option. When the bus drops you off in Ica you will have to take a cab to Huacachina.

On the other hand, if you choose to take a tour from Lima you will have already programmed your trip from start to finish.

Legend of the Huacachina
Huacca China is a Quechua word that means “the woman who cries”. This lagoon has a legend told by the locals who live around the lagoon. While there are several legends about its origin, one of the most popular stories refers to a young Inca woman.

According to legend, she came to the desert to mourn the death of her beloved, a young Inca warrior. It is believed that, after crying for days, her tears became an oasis. One day, while looking at the lagoon, she saw a warrior watching her. Frightened, the girl dived into the water to hide, but when she came out, she discovered that she had become a mermaid and that the robe she had left behind had turned into majestic sand dunes.

The locals say that every night she cries for her bad luck and lures men to drown in the lagoon next to her.
