ITINERARY

Day 1

Reception at the airport and transfer to Wasaí Maldonado Hotel, where you will receive a tropical welcome juice and a brief explanation of the trip.

Then we will start a trip of approximately two hours to Wasaí Tambopata lodge. The trip is initially carried out by land vehicle for 47km of paved road followed by 17 km of an off-road route that passes through settler’s farms and primary forests. This road ends in a small port in the Tambopata river where our motorboat will be waiting for us to cruise the Tambopata River downstream for approximately 20 minutes, headed towards WASAI Tambopata Lodge (Box lunch on the route). During the journey we will have the opportunity to observe various bird species, hopefully families of capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, alligators and other wildlife.

Reception and accommodation at the Lodge. Introductory nocturnal walk to understand rainforest ecosystems and see and listen to the insects, bats, frogs, and perhaps some occasional encounter with a nocturnal mammal. Return to the lodge for dinner. We will enjoy diverse sounds of the jungle which will accompany our first night in the Amazon. Night at Wasaí Tambopata Lodge. (BL, D).

Day 2

You will awake in a beautiful natural environment with the chanting of the oropéndolas and other exotic birds. Those who wake up early can enjoy the sunrise by the river, take pictures in the paths within the lodge or from our viewpoint, while enjoying a freshly filtered coffee or some infusion. After breakfast, we will cross the Tambopata river by boat and start a trekking by one of the trails of Wasaí’s private conservation concession. With some luck, we will be able to watch some mammals (monkeys, huanganas etc) on the way. We will also take advantage of this ride and try to fish some piranhas and visit some local plantations. We will return to the lodge at around 11.00 am. Those who wish can go kayaking on the river or go fishing some of the 250 species that inhabit the river.

After lunch, we will embark the boat and head to the Tambopata National Reserve where our campsite is located. During the journey we will pass through beautiful and pristine landscapes, with few or none human presence whatsoever, areas destined exclusively to conservation and eco-tourism, giving us an excellent opportunity to watch birds and animals such as capybaras, jaguars, turtles, caimans, etc.

As the afternoon falls, we will arrive to campsite, where we will settle our encampment in one of the beaches. We will make a short walk in the beach looking for tracks. At night, after dinner, we will light a campfire under the moonlight. Camping night (B, L, D)

Day 3

We will be awakened by the sounds of the howler monkeys by dawn, soon to be joined by the sound of other animals waking up and birds flying across the morning red sky. We will take a light coffee or some infusion to start our 25-minute ride upstream headed to the El Chuncho Great Macaw Claylick, inside the Tambopata National Reserve.

At our arrival, if the weather conditions are favorable, we will be the privileged spectators of one of the most amazing shows of wildlife: hundreds of parrots and macaws gather together to feed from the clay of the cliff, offering a great show of colors and sounds. We will have breakfast while we wait for the macaws to arrive. Halfway through the morning, we will initiate our way back downstream the Tambopata River, towards Campsite to pick up all the backpacks and tents. After that, we will return to Wasaí Tambopata Lodge through the Tambopata River, and then we will take a rest. Those who wish can swim by the Lodge’s dock or you may perform adventure activities: zip-line, triline, floating ropes.

After lunch, we will do an ethnobotanical walk where we will learn about the medical plants of the region and see walking palm trees, giant lupunas, and many other curious flora species. At night, we will go on a boat ride in search for caymans in the banks of the Tambopata river, where we will be able to get a closer look of them. Night at Wasaí Tambopata Lodge (B, L, D)

Day 4

You will have breakfast and then make the journey by boat and land vehicle to Puerto Maldonado. You will arrive at Wasaí Maldonado Hotel for lunch. In the afternoon you will travel down the Madre de Dios River for 30 minutes to the access trail that leads to Sandoval Lake. Then we will hike for 3 kms in the middle of the Tambopata National Reserve. Once at the lake we will get into a wooden canoe and the guide will paddle around the lake to look for Giant River Otters and birds such as Hoatzin and Anhinga. You will walk back through the forest to look for some of the nocturnal creatures of the forest and then travel back to the lodge for a final evening meal. Night at Wasaí Maldonado Hotel. (B, L, D)
